Good Friday (March 25) and Easter Monday (March 28) are public holidays, Australia wide; so you may be required to pay penalty rates when staff work on these dates. Easter Saturday is a public holiday in all states and territories, except WA. Easter Sunday is only a public holiday in NSW, ACT and VIC. Easter Tuesday (March 29) is a restricted public holiday in Tasmania; it only applies to certain awards/agreements as well as the public service.

Modern awards and enterprise agreements may include provisions to substitute public holidays for another day, so please check your contract.

Independent retail shops and non-exempt shops must be closed on Good Friday, unless they predominantly sell food and/or groceries. However; some shops are exempt from regulations regarding trading hours over the Easter long weekend.* For example, a few businesses are allowed to trade on Easter Sunday.
