Commencing in November 2018, the Fair Work Commission has been slowly introducing increases to the penalty rates under the General Retail Industry Award 2010. These more regular, smaller increases were designed to, in theory, lessen the impact on employers in this industry, whilst still passing on the penalty rate increase.

The most recent increase applies from the first full pay period on or after 1 March 2020.

For employees paid under the retail award wages, you need to be aware of these changes and update your payroll system to accommodate these increased rates. If you’re paying above award wages for your retail industry staff, we recommend that you review their pay rates and ensure they are still above award rates.

If your payroll system and processes aren’t easy to use and efficient when it comes to making changes like this, let us know. Our payroll service package might be just the solution you’re looking for. If you’re a Workplace Central Professional Employment client, we’ve got you covered.
