Accept and understand that it’s a busy time of year.
Sometimes, all your team needs from you is to understand what it’s like to be at the cash register for 8 hours, with only a lunch break and a couple of tea breaks to keep them going. It’s hectic, demanding and the customers aren’t always that nice, despite it being the season for giving…Rostering enough staff to manage the demands of your customers and giving your team an extra break here or there can help too.
Give everyone something to look forward to.
Perhaps it’s too busy for you to host your Christmas party in December. That doesn’t have to mean that you don’t celebrate your year with your team at all. Set a date in January so everyone has something to look forward to!
Food, food, food!
When it’s busy, sometimes people forget to eat, which isn’t great for managing emotions, making decisions and helping your busy customers. Leaving a fruit bowl or other healthy snacks in the kitchen can encourage your team to grab a quick, healthy snack, rather than searching for chocolate at 3pm.
Communication is key.
When leaders communicate effectively with their team, it helps people feel more comfortable about what’s expected of them, what to do when there’s a problem and generally feel good about being at work. Communication is most critical when it’s busy. Maintaining those communication channels can take extra work, but it’s less work than fixing a major problem because something fell through the cracks during the Christmas rush!
