Today (Wednesday 14th August 2019) is Ekka Day!

In the Brisbane City region, it’s a public holiday, which means the appropriate public holiday rates apply under your award or agreement.

Other areas of South East Queensland may have recognised Ekka Day as a public holiday earlier in the week, such as the Moreton Bay Region and Logan City, which was recognised as a public holiday on the 12th August.

It’s possible that your payroll system won’t automatically recognise a show day as a public holiday. Therefore, it’s always best to double-check data (before processing pays) to ensure that the relevant payments have been made to your employees.

Don’t forget that full-time and part-time employees who normally work on the day a public holiday falls, needs to be paid their base pay rate for the ordinary hours they would normally have worked, if they didn’t work due to the public holiday. It’s not ok to change their roster to avoid this payment.
