Check the correct state holidays are marked on your calendar, this Christmas – New Year period! The public and school holiday dates vary across Australia; which means staff availability and penalty pay rates differ, depending on the region your business operates within.
Christmas Day and New Years Day are approved public holidays in the Northern Territory, South Australia and Tasmania. The Boxing Day holiday, usually observed on December 26, will be substituted for Monday, December 28, this year.
The approved public holidays for the eastern states of QLD, NSW, ACT, VIC as well as WA, are:
- Christmas Day– Friday 25 December 2015
- Boxing Day – Saturday 26 December 2015
- New Year’s Day– Friday 1 January 2016
These states also enjoy an additional public holiday on Monday, December 28, because Boxing Day falls on a weekend, in 2015.
South Australians are extra lucky this year, with an extra two, half day public holidays gazetted by the State Government. This means that public holiday penalty rates will apply (subject to the industrial instrument), from 7:00pm – midnight; on both Christmas Eve and New Years Eve.
School holiday dates over the Christmas – New Year period vary from state to state. Alternative dates may apply for senior students and in some regional areas.
