Last week it was announced that Sunday and Public Holiday rates for retail and hospitality award workers will be reduced following a ruling of the Fair Work Commission.

The changes apply to the following awards:

  • Fast Food Industry Award 2010(the Fast Food Award)
  • General Retail Industry Award 2010 (the Retail Award)
  • Hospitality Industry (General) Award 2010 (the Hospitality Award)
  • Pharmacy Industry Award 2010 (the Pharmacy Award)
  • Registered and Licensed Clubs Award 2010 (the Clubs Award)
  • Restaurant Industry Award 2010 (the Restaurant Award)

The reduction to the penalty rates received on Sundays varies depending on the award and employee level. The following table from the Fair Work Commission helps to explain the changes.

Public holiday penalty rates will also be reduced, and again the rate of change is dependent on the award and employee level. The following table details the changes.

To allow sufficient time for staff and workplaces to adjust to the changes, the ruling will take effect until 1 July 2017.
