There are quite a few changes coming (or that have already arrived) for the General Retail Industry Award. These changes include:
Federal Minimum Wage Increase
There was a 1.75% increase to minimum pay rates under this award (and many others) from the first full pay period on or after 1 February 2021. In most cases, this increase should now be implemented in your payroll system.
Weekday Evening Rates
For casual employees, the weekday evening rates (work after 6pm) will be increasing from 1 March 2021, to 150% (up from 145%). These rates include the applicable casual loading.
Junior rates of pay have also been discarded in certain classifications within the award as of 1st March 2021.
Amendments to the General Retail Industry Award to junior rates only apply to levels 1-3.
Rates for juniors from level 4 and higher will no longer apply. This means employees who are younger than 21 years of age will need to be paid the full adult rate of pay if classified in levels 4 to 8.
The Fair Work Commissions’ decision has had blowback from industry associations. In part, the general consensus in the current climate of post-COVID-19 with many retailers still fighting for survival or on the brink of collapse is untimely.
