The Queensland government has recently passed changes to the Holidays and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2019, to create a new part-day public holiday…from 6pm to midnight on Christmas Eve.
Although ‘some’ businesses will be closed through this week anyway, for those that are open at one of the busiest times of the year, public holiday rates will now apply to their staff. It means updates to payroll systems and rosters, as well as budgets.
The Northern Territory and South Australia both currently recognise a part-day public holiday on Christmas Eve from 7pm.
Changes to entitlements so close to the date it applies can certainly create havoc for small businesses that don’t have sophisticated systems in place to manage these decisions effectively.
